Yesterday I stumbled across some delicious looking figs that reminded me of a sweet dish that my grandmother used to make - doce de figo verde em calda. For those not familiar with Portuguese, that translates to candied green figs in syrup - it’s a dessert which originated from the northern region of Portugal, but is now enjoyed across various regions of Brazil as well. I knew immediately that I had to try my hand at making this traditional treat, and I’m pleased to say that the result was just as sweet, sticky, and delicious as I remember it.
Ingredients
- 1 kilogram of green figs, de-stemmed and peeled
- 1 kilogram of sugar
- 1 liter of water
- Juice of one lemon
- 4 cloves
- Cinnamon stick
To get started, I boiled the peeled figs in a pot of water for around 30 minutes until they softened slightly. I then drained the figs and placed them in a separate pot, where I added the sugar, water, and lemon juice. I also added some cloves and a cinnamon stick to give the syrup a bit of extra flavor, giving everything a good stir to ensure the sugar was fully dissolved.
Cooking the figs
I then brought the mixture to a boil over medium heat, and let everything cook for around an hour until the figs were a rich, golden brown and the syrup had thickened nicely. I kept stirring intermittently to ensure the mixture didn’t stick to the pot or burn.
Storing the doce de figo verde em calda
Once I was happy with the consistency of the syrup and the color of the figs, I removed the pot from the heat and let the mixture cool slightly before transferring it to a clean, sterilized jar. I made sure to remove the cloves and cinnamon stick before doing so.
You can store the doce de figo verde em calda for up to a year in a cool, dark place. Once opened, it’ll last for a few weeks in the fridge.
What to serve with doce de figo verde em calda
This sweet dessert can be enjoyed on its own, or served alongside some creamy cheese or vanilla ice cream for a perfectly balanced dessert. I personally like to enjoy it with a nice cup of coffee, but it’s also delicious with a cup of tea or hot chocolate!
Doce de figo verde em calda may have originated from Portugal, but it’s now a staple dessert enjoyed by many across Brazil. The sticky, sweet flavors of the figs combined with the warming spices used in the syrup make it the perfect comfort food for those colder days. Whether you’re looking for a new recipe to try, or just fancy something sweet, give this doce de figo verde em calda a try - trust me, your taste buds will thank you!
